As my husband and two young children joined me to meander past the array of stalls, we found suprises on every corner – from owl displays to antique fruit presses, portuguese food stalls to bumper car fairground rides, stream trains and vintage tractors, long whispy beards, rockers straddeling growly bikes and of course an impressive array of campervans. There really was something for everyone. Danny Boyle would have been inspired!
We were able to take our dog, Bailey, on the outing – so it really was a family event. He had to keep on his lead – which is just as well, otherwise the tempting BBQ smells would have certainly led him astray.
The event took place over the weekend of 28th July, located between Cantebury and Dover. This was a particularly convenient location for the Buttercup Bus VW Camper gang, as Pushka (our cream wedding campervan) was on a mission to take her Bride to a wedding in Kent on the Saturday. Given that we were in the area, it would have been rude not to stop by this promising event. Pushka certainly turned a few heads as she turned up in full ribbon regalia on the Saturday evening… just in time fo the evening entertainment from the live bands, and a few fairground rides.
Basic camping facilities were provided – so we were able to enjoy being free spirits, retiring to our trusty camper (and tent) at the end of the evening. The walk back to our pitch was entertaining in itself, as we gawked at the different campers aong the way – all with their own unique style. The stewards were very helpful in guiding us to our pitch (although our 6m telescopic flag pole acted as our beacon!?!). There was no electrical hook up, limited running water and basic loo cabins – so a rustic camping experience – which suited us down to the ground.
The VDub crowd were brilliant to chat to as always. I met some great people, sharing their geeky wisdom on the best place to buy windsocks, campervan roof racks, poles to attach your dog leads and all things campervan! I loved it!
I really hope that this event takes place again next year – because the Buttercup Bus Gang will certainly be making it as a highlight on their social calendar!
